Clean Water, Safe Pregnancies: Aion Health SL’s Solar-Powered Reverse Osmosis Pump for Pregnant Women
Tellus in nunc turpis iaculis purus nunc. Cras vitae diam duis sapien.

In remote and underserved villages of Sierra Leone, clean drinking water is not just a health necessity—it’s a matter of survival, especially for pregnant women and newborns. Contaminated water contributes to waterborne diseases, anemia, maternal infections, and unsafe deliveries, all of which raise the risk of maternal and infant mortality. That’s why Aion Health SL, with generous support from the German Embassy in Freetown, launched a community-led solar-powered carbon filtration reverse osmosis pump project—bringing safe, clean, and accessible water to the most vulnerable women and children.
Project Overview
The Solar-Powered Carbon Filtration Reverse Osmosis (RO) Pump is a sustainable, community-managed water purification solution installed in Niagorehun Bargbo and Lowuma Village, two hard-to-reach rural communities in Bo District. These areas face extreme water insecurity, with women often walking over an hour to fetch water from unsafe sources like streams and uncovered wells.
This innovative system:
- Uses solar energy to power a submersible pump
- Filters water using carbon filtration and reverse osmosis to remove pathogens, heavy metals, and sediments
- Provides 24/7 access to safe drinking water for pregnant women, children, and the broader community
- Supports maternal health clinics and community hygiene practices

Why This Matters for Maternal Health
Access to safe and clean water is essential for:
- Preventing maternal infections, UTIs, and complications in pregnancy
- Ensuring hydration and nutrition during antenatal and postnatal periods
- Enabling safe labor and delivery practices in health facilities
- Reducing diarrheal diseases and child mortality in newborns and toddlers
- Supporting hygiene in maternal wards and delivery centers
Before the installation, women in Niagorehun Bargbo often missed antenatal appointments or suffered complications due to infections from poor water quality. Today, they can fetch clean, filtered water close to home—without risking their health or safety.
Community-Led Implementation
This project prioritized local ownership and sustainability:
- Community health workers were trained in water safety and system maintenance
- A local water management committee was formed to oversee operations and educate families on hygiene
- Pregnant and lactating mothers were prioritized for early access
- The project was integrated with mobile maternal outreach clinics to maximize impact
The approach ensures not just infrastructure, but a change in behavior and long-term resilience.
Support from the German Embassy in Freetown
This transformative project was made possible by a micro-grant from the German Embassy in Freetown, as part of its commitment to supporting grassroots health and development solutions. Their support reflects a growing recognition that climate-resilient, solar-powered technologies can play a vital role in strengthening rural health systems and reducing maternal mortality.
“This initiative shows how innovation, sustainability, and local leadership can come together to solve deeply rooted public health challenges.”
— Project Lead, Aion Health SL

Impact Snapshot
- 2 villages served: Niagorehun Bargbo and Lowuma
- Over 800 residents reached, including 150+ women of reproductive age
- Daily water access for maternal clinics, families, and community schools
- Reduction in reported cases of waterborne illnesses and maternal infections
Looking Ahead
Aion Health SL plans to:
- Replicate this model in five additional underserved villages
- Integrate the water system into school health and hygiene programs
- Pair clean water access with mobile clinic maternal check-ups and nutrition support
- Train more women-led water stewards in system upkeep and community education

Conclusion: Clean Water is a Maternal Right
This solar-powered RO system is more than a water project—it’s a lifeline for women, mothers, and newborns. It proves that clean water, powered by the sun and sustained by communities, can unlock better health outcomes, gender equality, and rural development.
With continued investment and innovation, we can ensure that no woman has to risk her life due to lack of water, and every child is born into a healthier, more dignified environment.
